Judd, Mary Louisa

Alexander and Mary Louisa McKinlay

Mary Louisa Judd (Louise) was born in Woodstock, Ontario on May 16, 1893 to Celia Lorne Braham and Harry Judd.  She was an only child.  Louise married Alexander Nichol McKinlay (Alex) on August 24, 1919 at the Bloor Street Baptist Church, 12 Clinton Avenue in Toronto, Ontario.

Louise and Alex McKinlay had 3 children, Muriel (b.1920), Angus Franklin (b.1922) and Douglas (b.1928).  Some of their five grandchildren affectionately called them MA and DA.  They resided for most of their married life at 408 Davisville Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, retiring to Newburgh, Ontario in 1957.

The McKinlay's adopted (perhaps not legally) a daughter, Beryl Evans.  Her family in England had passed away and she came to Canada to live with a brother who couldn’t care for her.  She became part of the McKinlay family and shared the back bedroom on Davisville Avenue with Muriel.  Muriel found an RAF pin which Beryl wanted very much.  She agreed to buy Muriel any brooch she wanted in exchange for the RAF pin and they did do the exchange. Beryl was very fond of Douglas who was quite a bit younger and she affectionately called him "cakey boy".  When she was about 22 years old, she required mastoid surgery.  Muriel found a picture of Beryl on Beryl's bed with a purple scarf encircling the picture after she had left for the hospital.  After the surgery, she was scheduled to return home the next day when she unexpectantly died (in approximately 1935).  It was a huge loss for her adopted family.  Her casket was laid out in the living room of Davisville Avenue.

Louise was a warm, loving grandmother with red hair.  At one time she ran a catering business and to her grandchildren’s delight, they would watch her make the rolled sandwiches by the hundreds.  She never lost patience with them or had a harsh word.  They remember her unconditional love to this day.

Alex died of a sudden heart attack in 1958.  Several years later Louise went to live with her son, Frank, first in Timmins, Ontario and later in Parry Sound and then Renfrew, Ontario where she passed away on April 18, 1967.

Mary Louisa McKinlay is buried with her husband, Alexander Nicoll McKinlay in the Newburg United Cemetery (Reference # KG3718) near Napanee, Ontario.
