Alexander and Mary Louisa McKinlay |
Mary Louisa Judd (Louise) was born in Woodstock, Ontario on May 16, 1893 to Celia Lorne Braham and Harry Judd. She was an only child. Louise married Alexander Nichol McKinlay (Alex) on August 24, 1919 at the Bloor Street Baptist Church, 12 Clinton Avenue in Toronto, Ontario.
Louise and Alex McKinlay had 3 children, Muriel (b.1920), Angus Franklin (b.1922) and Douglas (b.1928). Some of their five grandchildren affectionately called them MA and DA. They resided for most of their married life at 408 Davisville Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, retiring to Newburgh, Ontario in 1957.
The McKinlay's adopted (perhaps not legally) a daughter, Beryl Evans. Her family in England had passed away and she came to Canada to live with a brother who couldn’t care for her. She became part of the McKinlay family and shared the back bedroom on Davisville Avenue with Muriel. Muriel found an RAF pin which Beryl wanted very much. She agreed to buy Muriel any brooch she wanted in exchange for the RAF pin and they did do the exchange. Beryl was very fond of Douglas who was quite a bit younger and she affectionately called him "cakey boy". When she was about 22 years old, she required mastoid surgery. Muriel found a picture of Beryl on Beryl's bed with a purple scarf encircling the picture after she had left for the hospital. After the surgery, she was scheduled to return home the next day when she unexpectantly died (in approximately 1935). It was a huge loss for her adopted family. Her casket was laid out in the living room of Davisville Avenue.
Louise was a warm, loving grandmother with red hair. At one time she ran a catering business and to her grandchildren’s delight, they would watch her make the rolled sandwiches by the hundreds. She never lost patience with them or had a harsh word. They remember her unconditional love to this day.
Alex died of a sudden heart attack in 1958. Several years later Louise went to live with her son, Frank, first in Timmins, Ontario and later in Parry Sound and then Renfrew, Ontario where she passed away on April 18, 1967.
Mary Louisa McKinlay is buried with her husband, Alexander Nicoll McKinlay in the Newburg United Cemetery (Reference # KG3718) near Napanee, Ontario.

McKinlay, Alexander Nicoll
Alex was a generous, kind person, loving husband, father, brother and son. He was fortunate during the depression of the 1920’s to have a job and a means to support his family as many people were out of work. He was known by his family for his generosity to others less fortunate. Many times when buying a roast of beef for his family he would buy one for another family less fortunate. He never had a harsh word to say about others. Alex was a quiet, respectful man.
His children, Muriel, Frank, and Douglas have remembered the cold winter days when their father would bring their shoes and come to pick them up at the outdoor rink at Davisville Park. Their shoes had hot baked potatoes in them to keep them warm for the walk home. When they returned home, Alex would put the potatoes back on a special shelf in the furnace to reheat while the children got into their pajamas. Once in their pajamas they would eat the potatoes!

He worked as a night watchman (Simpsons), and also worked for F. Simpson & Son (grocer) in Toronto, Ontario. He would walk everywhere and he walked to/from work -- from Davisville Avenue to Bloor and Young to save 7 cents!

He was a stone mason in Scotland and was recruited by the Ontario Government to help build the Ontario Parliament Buildings. He settled in Georgetown Ontario where the stone quarry was located. Apparently, they cut the stone, numbered the piece and sent it to the site of the Parliament Buildings in downtown Toronto. Angus died on April 25, 1894 at the age of 46. His death was believed to be from a lung disease, perhaps silicosis, from the dust of cutting stones. He married Margaret McKinlay (same last name) on January 11, 1876. At the time of his death, they had 6 young children. Alexander Nicoll McKinlay was the youngest child and was 3 years old at the time. Angus is buried with his wife, Margaret in the Georgetown Municipal Cemetery.

Family members will remember Papa Judd living upstairs in Alex and Louise’s house (Mary Louisa McKinlay) at 408 Davisville Avenue, Toronto, Ontario. He was crippled so he only came downstairs on very special occasions and then his grandsons’ Frank and Doug would carry him down the stairs. He always shared his “humbugs” with his great-grandchildren.
In his older years he lived in an old age home on Christie Street in Toronto. He is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto.
