McKinlay, Barbara Jessie

Barbara Jessie McKinlay was born on February 11, 1889 to Margaret and Angus McKinlay in Georgetown Ontario.  She had five siblings:  Isabella Lyla (1877), Margaret Edna (1881), Archibald Franklin (1883), James Murray (1886), Alexander Nicoll (1891).

Her father Angus died at the age of 47 in 1884 in Georgetown, Ontario.  After his death, his wife Margaret moved to 16 Brunswick Avenue in Toronto with her children.  Margaret took in borders from the University of Toronto to help support her family.  One of the borders was a young dental student by the name of Clement James Devine.

Jessie married Clement Devine and moved to Beaverton, Ontario where they had 8 children:  Margaret, James, Arthur Franklin, John, Russell, Joseph, William and Barbara.

Jessie was a jolly, happy, fun mother who loved her life.  She was a very pleasant woman who was always cooking.

She died on Jan 5, 1974.

McKinlay, Douglas Alexander

Doug was born at 408 Davisville Avenue in Toronto on April 22, 1928.    The VON (Victorian Order of Nurses) was in attendance.  Doug has told the story, that if a family had Metropolitan Life Insurance,  a VON was provided for the birth.  Miss Baines was the VON for the Davisville district and if the children saw Miss Baines in the area they knew she was there for a birth.

In his pre-school days, Poppa Judd would take him to the park on Mount Pleasant Avenue.   Doug would play with his friends while Poppa Judd would have a visit with his old buddies.

Doug attended Hodgson school on Davisville Avenue in Toronto along with his siblings, Muriel and Frank.

Doug's first full time job was Simpsons in the mail order advertising department. He went to Northern Vocational School at night and continued to work at Simpsons for almost 10 years.

He married Lorena Mae Wright in 1950.  They had two children, Andrew Franklin born in 1953 and Jane Louise born in 1957.

Doug took a job in Strathcona Ontario in 1952 with the Strathcona Paper Mill. He later moved back to the Toronto area and then to the Victoria, British Columbia area where he worked for the University of Victoria at Dunsmuir Lodge. In his retirement he lives in Saanichton, B.C.

Lorena Mae (Wright) McKinlay died peacefully in her sleep on February 16, 2016.
Douglas Alexander McKinlay died in Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Saanichton, B.C. on
February 4, 2017 with his daughter Jane at his side.
